INTERNSHIP PROGRAMME FOR PODIATRISTS

This internship is for podiatrists wishing to learn about orthopaedic treatment of foot conditions. It comprises two days of training at Halluxmed Foot and Knee Surgery. The first day introduces the hospital ward and operating theatre and allows observation of operations. The second day covers modern foot imaging and work in the orthopaedic clinic, including consultations and patient examinations. The detailed programme at Halluxmed Foot and Knee Surgery follows:

Day 1

Duration: 8:00–15:00 or later, until operations finish

  • The patient's journey to the ward
  • what does the hospital do?
  • how does the ward work?
  • how is the patient prepared for surgery?
  • Operating theatre
  • how and where can you move around the operating room?
  • stages of preparing the patient for surgery: anaesthesia and its types, patient monitoring, positioning and other measures
  • preparing surgeons for the operation
  • Observing surgical procedures:
  • preoperative discussion of the condition and selected surgical technique
  • observing anaesthesia
  • observing operations in the operating room, with opportunities to ask questions and see implants, specialised instruments and endoscopic equipment
  • The patient after surgery:
  • when can patients get up, and how mobile are they after surgery?
  • what orthopaedic aids do they need?
  • what pain relief is provided?

Day 2

Duration: 8:00–15:00

  • What does modern diagnosis of foot conditions involve?
  • visit to the pedobarography laboratory
  • visit to the CT/X-ray department, with the opportunity for a highly specialised standing CT examination
  • Participation in medical consultations
  • postoperative visits: what can patients do after surgery, and when?
  • consultation visits: what is troubling the patient? Examination, history and recommendations.
  • End of the internship, questions and presentation of participation certificates.
